The Passion of Perpetua and FelicityBy Thomas J. Heffernan

Winner of the Modern Language Association Prize for a Scholarly Edition

One of the most widely read and studied texts composed in Late Antiquity is the prison diary of Vibia Perpetua, a young woman of the elite classes who was martyred in March of the year 202 or 203 C.E. in Carthage, as part of a civic celebration honoring Caesar Geta. She was well-married and had recently become the mother of a baby son, but despite her advantages, she refused to recant her faith when she was arrested with other recent converts to Christianity. Imprisoned with her was her pregnant slave Felicity. Perpetua's steadfastness in her belief led to her martyrdom in the amphitheater. A description of the heroic deaths of both women, and the autobiography of one of the leaders of the Christian community, Saturus, is woven into Perpetua's diary by an anonymous editor, who tells us that, as they died, Perpetua, Felicity, and the other condemned Christians bid farewell with a kiss of peace.

This unique and precious text survives in one Greek and in nine Latin manuscript versions. Thomas Heffernan's new study contains much that has never been done before, including a prosopography of all the individuals mentioned in the Passion, a new English translation and the first detailed historical commentary in English on the entire narrative of the Passion. It also includes a newly edited version of the Latin text based on all the extant manuscripts and - rarer still - the Greek text. He concludes the book with a complete codicological description of all of the known manuscripts and thorough scholarly indices of the text itself. Perpetua's prison diary is a revered text of early Christianity, and Heffernan's new translation and commentary brings unprecedented scholarly resources to the much-loved Passion.

"This thick volume collects what readers would otherwise have to cull or create from several sources...Heffernan's study is easily recommended for libraries and for graduate students of early Christianity and hagiography."--Journal of Late Antiquity

"A felicitous translation, and a very detailed commentary on historical, prosopographical, theological, and philosophical issues." --Common Knowledge

"An elaborate, full-scale edition with translation, commentary, and supplementary material...For the first time, the [Passion of Perpetua and Felicity] has truly been made accessible for an international, English readership. Heffernan's impressive book is the fruit of many years of study and work. It covers nearly all basic material about the text one might wish, and conveniently bundles all relevant philological and textual information in one volume. The result is no less than breathtaking: this is a truly amazing achievement, which can make any classicist or historian feel proud of our field of studies...This edition of The Passion of Perpetua and Felicity will undoubtedly be the standard tool for Perpetua scholars in the foreseeable future. It is a splendid achievement, which will greatly serve both the scholarly community and a larger readership. Professor Heffernan has earned deep gratitude and admiration of all those working in the field of Classics." --Histos

"Heffernan's edition, translation, and commentary of The Passion of Perpetua and Felicity will be considered the definitive work on the subject. It is a delight to the scholar, teacher, and student of late Latin or early Christianity."--Sarah Klitenic Wear, Bryn Mawr Classical Review

"A meticulous line-by-line commentary" --Times Literary Supplement

"The result is no less than breathtaking: this is a truly amazing achievement, which can make any classicist or historian feel proud of our field of studies." --Histos

"Heffernan's comprehensive and critical treatment of the Passion of Perpetua and Felicity offers specialists and other students of early Christianity the most thorough exposition to date of the Passion's textual, rhetorical, textual, and interpretive complexity. We all owe Thomas Heffernan a debt for lending his scholarly precision and intellectual generosity to this task. Heffernan's text, translation, and commentary will most certainly be the standard edition of this text on which scholars and students will rely in future generations."
--Elizabeth Castelli, Professor and Chair of the Religion Department, Barnard College

"This edition, translation, and comprehensive commentary will remain the definitive resource for scholars who study this influential text. Furthermore, Heffernan's elegant translation perfectly captures the voice of this early Christian woman, whose diary has captivated readers for almost 2000 years."
--Joyce E. Salisbury, author of Perpetua's Passion: Death and Memory of a Young Roman Woman

"At last here is a detailed edition and commentary that provides a close and much-needed analysis of the ancient texts in which this remarkable narrative is preserved. Heffernan's careful discussion of the historical context of Perpetua's martyrology shows how a woman of Perpetua's social class was able to write such a vivid account of her own experiences; it also explains how and why her story was preserved, and became an inspiration to Christians throughout the ancient world."
--Mary Lefkowitz, Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities emerita, Wellesley College

"This new, comprehensive work will enable the scholar and general reader to gain genuine insight, contextual and literary understanding, and appreciation of the work. The book provides a number of firsts... The result is a model work on contextualization of an ancient manuscript. TJH has set a standard for all to emulate and produced a monumental and painstakingly high-level work." --Religious Studies Review

Lair of Dreams: A Diviners Novel (The Diviners), by Libba Bray

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up—This breathtaking sequel to The Diviners (Little, Brown, 2012) is worth the wait. The novel opens in 1927 New York City, as construction continues on expanding the subway system. When workers break through to an older and forgotten train station, they develop a "sleeping sickness," trapped first by dreams and then "nightmare[s] from which they will, never, ever wake." Bray sets the stage for a mesmerizing exploration of dreams, including the American Dream—the "opiate futility of hope"—the exploitation of religion, science, and patriotism for evil ends. Although the same major characters from the previous volume appear in this installment, an additional Diviner, Ling Chan, makes her debut. She can dreamwalk and communicate with the dead. She and Henry enter dreams together to search for Ling's friend, George (who has fallen ill with the sleeping sickness), and Henry's lover, Louis. Evie O'Neill, still a quintessential flapper on the surface, is back, now famous as the "Sweetheart Seer" on a radio show. A sinister government plot to exploit people who display any Diviner talent brings the characters together for an action-packed, fast-paced, and slang-filled read. VERDICT A multilayered, character-driven, and richly rewarding installment to the paranormal historical fiction series.—Nina Sachs, Walker Memorial Library, Westbrook, ME

I had the perfect plan, I started the audio book right at the beginning of September, and since a 20 hour audioboook usually takes me a month to listen to, the timing of me finishing this would be perfectly timed for when the 3rd book came out. Well, it is only September 6th, and I have already finished it. As far as being a sequel, I can say that I enjoyed this one almost as much, if not just as much, and the first book. There were definitely things I liked more about this book and there were things that I enjoyed more in the first book. The thing that disappointed me a little about Lair of Dreams was that the plot/big mystery/the villain of this book was far less interesting than Naughty John. Pretty early on I was able to figure out who the villain was, and the fact that the our main characters couldn't figure it out just made me frustrated, because it was SO obvious. Also, The dream world was far less interesting to me than a serial killer. What I did love more about this book that The Diviners was that we got more Evie and Sam. I just love those two so much, and one of my favorite tropes in the fake relationship one, so I was living every time I read their parts. Like I was at the end of The Diviners, I am still worried that Libba Bray might make the whole love triangle a huger part in the next book, which while it wouldn't completely ruin the book, it would definitely knock it down a start or two.One thing that I loved about the first book that carried on into this book was the atmosphere of the 1920's. Libba Bray continued to just be amazing and make the reader actually feel like you are in that time period. I also, well I wouldn't say enjoyed, but appreciated the emphasis on immigrants in this book and the prejudice/racism during the time period. The one part that got me the most angry was "The Wolf Among Us" chapter with Sarah Snow. I had to stop listening for a second, because I was so angry that people once (and some still do) think like that. While it was hard to listen to parts like those, I think they are important, and the impact is important. One final thing because I am pretty sure I forgot to put this in my Diviners review, CHECK OUT THE AUDIOBOOK. Libba Brays writing with January LaVoy reading it is just AMAZING.

4.5 StarsPlot: The struggle with all sequels is not being able to remember what happened in the first book. Luckily, Libba Bray thinks of everything and feeds the reader small snippets of what happened in The Diviners to help jog memory.Libba Bray introduces a new paranormal mystery that unravels little by little. Libba Bray never fails to get me invested in one of her unique mysteries and the tale of the Sleeping Sickness is no different. I will say that Lair of Dreams lacks the creeptastic gore that I came to love in The Diviners. Instead, I connected with Lair of Dreams on a more emotional level.Along with the Sleeping Sickness mystery, Lair of Dreams hints at the overall conflict which leaves the reader with nothing but questions as the novel concludes.Characters: Everyone that you know and love from The Diviners is back, and then some! We are introduced to Ling Chan, the Chinese-Irish-American girl with a love for science and a knack for dream walking. I abso-tive-ly adored her spunk and the amount of love and attention that Libba Bray put into her character.Along with some new faces, the gang reunites and digs deeper into their Diviner gifts. While The Diviners was Evie-centric, I felt that Evie was barely present in Lair in Dreams. Instead, we follow Henry's desire to become a musician and explore his emotional past. My main obsession with this series is Bray's dedication to her characters. Each person that makes an appearance in Lair of Dreams is breathed into life with enough backstory to make you empathize or want to learn more. Evie is clearly going through a rough patch after the events of The Diviners and we are able to see how Naughty Jon affected her and her relationships with others. The love triangle that played second fiddle in The Diviners comes more to light in Lair of Dreams and rips my soul into little pieces. I lost a lot of hope for my ship, but I'm not giving up! NEVER.World Building: While reading this book, I had to actively stop myself from using 1920s slang when talking to family and friends. This world is so engulfing that I physically had to pull myself back to the 21st century. One thing that makes Libba Bray's 1920s so perfect is that she doesn't shy from its brutal history. The KKK rears its ugly head, the Chinese citizens are threatened with deportation, and African Americans have to watch their music stolen from the streets of Harlem and paraded as a White invention. It is also fascinating that the characters remark on The Great American Future and Exceptionalism while damning minorities in the same breath.Short N Sweet: Lair of Dreams is posi-tut-tely thrilling and will have you obsessively refreshing GoodReads for an update on the third installment.

This second Diviners novel does not disappoint. Libba Bray breathes life into her clutch of main characters, who are as complex and complicated, conflicted and confused, as the readers who immerse themselves in this brilliant and terrifying landscape she has created. Nothing in Lair of Dreams is pat or hackneyed; the young adults at the center of the series are fraught with insecurities and caught in a web of life and death --and what stalks between-- but they are also relatable, familiar in their yearning for love, closure, understanding, and recognition. I love that the larger than life supernatural rush of the plot never takes away from the basic humanity of the characters. The horror of nightmarish evil Bray's characters must work against in Lair of Dreams certainly got into my head, and I read through the wee hours of the night, unwilling to sleep when so much in the novel's world was at stake. I take some comfort in the novel's underlying promise of hope, of good prevailing over evil. The next book in the Diviners series will reveal whether I am right or wrong; either way, I cannot wait to dive in!
